Killing Time
We needed something to do this morning, so when Riley came up to me carrying one of last night's now-defunct-as-a-decorational-device pumpkins, inspiration struck. She was back and forth between thinking the process was the most fun thing ever and completely gross.

Here's the pre-cooked version, half with salt, and half with salt+garlic. Here's hoping!

Trick-or-Treat!
For Halloween this year, we decided to dress Riley up as a witch. We originally were going to have her be a bumblebee. We had the costume from last year; it still fit and she only wore it for about a total of 2 minutes. But... we have this cute little broom that Riley loves to carry with her everywhere. She also has this nice black coat that she got from her cousin Kate, and she's just really started to be able to wear it. So, we went out to Value Village today, got a witch's hat for about $2, and voila! Riley's got a Halloween costume!
This year we decided that Riley could handle going out to a few houses. Cam's folks had come down so they could see Riley in her outfit. So, they gave out candy while we took Riley to some of our neighbors. She went to 5 houses, and she did great! She loved picking out a piece of candy to put in her pumpkin bucket. She also loved walking down the street with her broom between her legs, just like a little witch! We live on a cul-de-sac, so it was nice that we didn't have to worry too much about cars and just let Riley walk home with her broom and bucket.
Apparently Riley loved getting candy so much that when she got home, she found the bowl of candy that we had to give out and started putting some in her own bucket!
As a cap to Riley's exciting evening, we drove over to the director of Riley's day care so she could see Riley. Instead of giving out candy, she gave Riley a new toy! She did this for every one of her day care kids that came by, which was so sweet! It was supposed to be Riley's choice what she got, but Mommy (with Daddy's help) vetoed the choice of a little baby that opened/closed her eyes. I just figured that after about 2 days, Riley would get bored with the doll. So, we got a puzzle with lots of different animals on them.
Here's a slideshow of some of the good pictures of the night. We would have taken a video, but it was getting dark and we weren't really getting good videos that you could see anything in. One of my favorite shots is the last one... you could tell how tired Riley after all the excitement!

Pumpkin Farm, Take Two
Here's our second trip to a pumpkin farm, along with Gran and Grandpa McLeman (Mommy taking the day to polish off those pesky dissertation revisions...).
As with the last pumpkin patch, she started off nervously when it came to feeding the animals. They were a little pushier this time...here's her getting swarmed by a pair trying to get some food from Gran:

But she quickly fell in love with the animals, and soon she was begging for more food to give to one particular goat:

Finally, here's Riley playing in a gigantic tub of mini-pumpkins that were used for the Pumpkin Slingshot game -- Gran was the best slingshotter of the group, it turns out.

I have a ton more great videos from this trip, so I'll save some for the next post.

Our lil pumpkin!
Last weekend, Cam and I, along with our friends Greg and Erin, decided to take our little ones, Riley and Tygh, to go pick some pumpkins from a pumpkin patch.
The place was huge! On one side of the farm was the patch of pumpkins, which as soon as we got there and got out of the car, Riley found. Here's a video of Riley not moments after we arrived trying to pick up one of the pumpkins (a common theme throughout the day).

On the other side of the farm were all these attractions. There were zip lines, apple slings, apples shooters, a hay maze, a petting zoo, plus more. After spending a few minutes laughing at Riley's vain attempts to pick up pumpkins, we met up with Greg, Erin, and Tygh and decided to see the attractions. Now, technically you were supposed to pay $10 per adult to actually do any of the activities (kids were free), but you could walk around for free. So, we walked around, although admittedly we went in to the petting zoo (no one was monitoring anything really) so the kids could see the animals.
It was super cute because when Riley saw the cows she starting saying, "Moo!" She was also brave enough to have the goats eat from her hand. We got a picture of it, but when we tried to video it she had decided that she didn't like it.

After we toured around some more (and got some kettle corn, which both kids LOVED), we headed off to find our pumpkins. The great thing about going to a patch like this is that they give you a wheelbarrow to cart your pumpkins around in. Or small children. Whatever works.
Here's Riley and Tygh exploring our wheelbarrow.

Here's the picture I referenced in the video. I just love the look on Tygh's face.

Unfortunately we don't have any great videos of the two kids trying to pick up a pumpkin together. It was kind of hard to keep up with them as they just went every which way, enjoying the open space.
After spending a couple of hours running around, both kids were pretty wiped. Good thing we had that wheelbarrow. As Riley can attest, it sure seemed like the way to travel!

Hopefully when we move to Michigan they'll have pumpkin farms like this. I never went to one as a kid (not that I remember anyway), and I think that it would be super fun to go every year and make it a family tradition!
